Michael Furlong joined the firm in 1983 and is a principal of the firm. Mr. Furlong specializes in business and transactional matters. He provides general representation to a variety of Vermont-based and regional business enterprises. His clients include financial institutions, health care providers, real estate development firms and technology ventures. He represents and advises clients in connection with business organization, mergers and acquisitions, financing transactions, the purchase, sale, development and leasing of commercial real estate, and other business-related matters.

Mr. Furlong is recognized in the peer review publication, The Best Lawyers in America, in the fields of corporate law and mergers & acquisitions law.

Mr. Furlong is a Director of Merchants Bancshares, Inc. and the Chair of the Board of Directors of Merchants Bank. He is a director emeritus and past Chair of the Board of Wake Robin Corporation. He is a past President of the Chittenden County Bar Association and a former member of the City of Burlington Planning Commission. Mr. Furlong has also served on the Panel of Commercial Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association, and has acted as neutral arbitrator or mediator in a variety of commercial disputes. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Furlong served as Corporate Attorney at Green Mountain Power Corporation, a Vermont-based electric utility.

Mr. Furlong is a graduate of Cornell University Law School (cum laude, 1978) and Middlebury College (B.A., cum laude, 1973). At Cornell, he was an Editor of the Cornell Law Review.
