Sheehey Welcomes Matthew Greer to the Firm

Sheehey Furlong & Behm P.C. is pleased to announce that Attorney Matthew J. Greer has joined the firm as Of Counsel.

Matt’s practice will focus on civil and criminal litigation, particularly at the appellate level. Before joining the firm, Matt clerked for the Honorable Mark R. Hornak on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh, PA and then for the Honorable Peter W. Hall on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Rutland, VT. Following his clerkships Matt practiced for several years at Williams and Connolly in Washington D.C., one of the country’s most highly regarded trial and appellate litigation firms. During his time at W&C, Matt litigated in the United States Supreme Court, federal courts of appeals, and state courts of appeals, as well as in trial courts across the country.

Matt graduated magna cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Journal of International Law and was a member of the Appellate Advocacy Division of the Barristers’ Council. Matt received his B.S. cum laude from the University of Vermont.

“It is our pleasure to welcome Matt to Sheehey and back to his home state of Vermont,” said Sheehey Managing Partner Ian Carleton. “In just a few short weeks Matt has already demonstrated the exceptional litigation skills and judgment one might expect from an attorney with his high caliber background. His sharp legal mind is a tremendous addition to our litigation group as we vigorously represent our clients in the trial courtroom and beyond.”

Devin T. McKnight Elected Director of Sheehey

Sheehey Furlong & Behm P.C. is pleased to announce that attorney Devin McKnight has been elected as a Principal and Director of the firm effective January 1, 2023.  Devin first joined the firm as an associate attorney in 2019, with a practice focused primarily on criminal and civil litigation.  He has defended clients in matters involving trade secret appropriation, violation of employee non-competes, medical malpractice, and breach of contract.  He has also defended clients in federal criminal court in complex conspiracy investigations involving drug sales and fraud.

McKnight graduated with honors from the George Washington University Law School in 2013.  Upon graduating he completed a two-year clerkship with Vermont Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Skoglund, followed by a two-year clerkship with Magistrate Judge John Conroy in the United States District Court for the District of Vermont.  McKnight is also a graduate of the Lake Champlain Chamber’s Leadership Program, and was selected to the New England Super Lawyers list in 2022 as a Rising Star.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome Devin to the Sheehey partnership,” states Sheehey’s Managing Partner, Ian Carleton.  “He has exactly the kind of creativity, tenacity, judgment, attention to detail, and most of all moral compass that we look for in new partners.  In some respects, he was qualified to join the partnership from day one.”

Sheehey Announces New Managing Partner

Attorney Ian Carleton has been elected as managing director of Sheehey Furlong & Behm P.C., replacing David Austin who retired from the practice of law at the end of last year. Austin served as managing director for the past eight years.

Commenting on his retirement, Austin noted, “Like many people, I retire with mixed feelings. I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life. I will also miss working with the smart and committed group of people at Sheehey.”

Carleton joined the firm in February 2003, has been a director and shareholder since 2004, and has served as the firm’s Director of Litigation for the past five years. A graduate of Columbia University (’93) and Yale Law School (’99), Carleton litigates in state and federal courts in Vermont and around the country. He serves on the Vermont Commission on the Well-Being of the Legal Profession, received the Pro Bono Service Award from the Vermont Bar Association in 2019, and has been selected to the New England Super Lawyers list numerous times.

“Sheehey is a creative, flexible, energetic, and fun place to practice law,” Carleton says. “I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to this firm and my wonderful colleagues for the many years of mentoring, support and friendship I have enjoyed with them. As I approach my 20th anniversary at Sheehey, I am excited, honored and more than a little humbled to step into the role of firm manager. I have big shoes to fill with David’s departure.”
